Paralympian Kieran Ault-Connell
Kieran Ault-Connell, OAM, is proof of how sheer determination, a positive frame of mind and a background in Scouting can help you achieve at the highest level.
Former Scout Kieran is competing in the Javelin, 100m Sprint and 4x100m Relay at the 2004 Athens Paralympics which runs from 17-28 September. He is an elite athlete with Cerebral Palsy.
After watching the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, he decided to take up athletics and was a Gold medalist and world record holder in the 4x100m and 4x400m Cerebral Palsy Men’s Relays at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. He also competed in the Long Jump, Javelin, and 100m Sprint.
Kieran is a former Cub and Scout of the 1st Seaford Group in Melbourne. He loved his time in the Movement and says, “I recall being taught the value of working in a team and looking after one another. I remember many group activities such as sport, camps, presentations and even washing dishes!!”
Helping other people succeed in life is something Kieran does by participating in the Victorian Institute of Sport’s “Sportspersons in Schools” Public Speaking Program. Achieving goals is something he is doing in more than one area of his life with as he studies for a Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Radiation Sciences at Monash University in Victoria.
“My experience (in Scouts) was a very positive one, and looking back, it was a big step in enjoying the feeling of self-sufficiency, accepting responsibilities and through this, setting and achieving goals. I would recommend Scouts to all children and parents as it teaches self-awareness and a person’s ability to take a role in society.”
In 2001, Kieran was awarded an Order of Australia (OAM) for services to sport as a Paralympics Gold medal winner. Scouts Australia wishes Kieran the very best for his second Paralympics, is proud of his world record achievements as an elite athlete and hopes that Scouting has helped contribute to his success.
