McHappy Day 2012

Thank you to all participants who took part in McHappy Day 2011! Your efforts made McHappy Day a rewarding day for many seriously ill children around Australia!

This is the sixth year of Scouts Australia’s partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) to raise funds for seriously ill children and their families by participating in McHappy Day 2012!

Last year the day raised over $3 million for RMHC, and we also had a record number of Scouts take part in raising funds. This year we hope to make McHappy Day bigger and better. RMHC has set a target of raising $3.66 million and we want to help them raise it!

100% of the money raised on McHappy Day goes to RMHC, so our members can feel good about helping seriously ill kids… and it’s also a great way for your Group to talk about Scouting with families in your local community.

The programs of Ronald McDonald House Charities touch one in eight people in Australia. Each family has a different story but with one important thing in common – they all have seriously ill children and face traumatic times.  Most of the Scout Groups who participated in McHappy Day 2011 found it a highly ‘worthwhile’ event. The Groups highlighted that the advantage of their participation in McHappy Day was that the event allowed them to:

  • Demonstrate the Scout Promise and Law of Helping Other People
  • Help Youth Members appreciate the importance of giving service to the community, especially helping other kids
  • Contribute back to RMHC, an organisation which had helped many of the Youth Members and their friends when they were sick
  • Work towards Award Scheme badges
  • Create awareness of Scouting in the community with possible recruitment opportunities
  • Develop bonds between the Scout Group and the local McDonald’s store
  • Create a fun and positive experience for those members involved.
  • Encourage quieter members of the Scout Group to become more confident and sociable.

Some positive testimonials by some Scout Groups participating in McHappy Day 2011 were:

  • 1st Portland (NSW): “It was a great way to get the quieter members of our pack to interact with unfamiliar people. The reactions were mainly positive when people were asked to contribute...”
  • Mudgee (NSW): “Great, happy to participate, a good way to demonstrate our promise and law to help other people. Yes would take part in 2012. It’s a good opportunity to be seen out and about, good publicity and an opportunity for Joey Scouts to complete their Promise challenge help other people task.”
  • Katherine (NT): “We all viewed it as part of our Duty to Help Others. All were happy to take part and the Youth had a good time.”
  • Turners Beach (TAS): “All our Youth members were enthusiastic as one of our own Cubs had reason to use the facility in Melbourne and her family stayed there when she was little and very sick. It was a worthwhile cause.”
  • 1st Moorabbin (VIC): “The Scouts enjoyed the chance to raise money and awareness about Scouts in the community.”
  • 1st Bennetswood (VIC): “ They loved it (raising money and helping out in the McDonald’s restaurant), and were begging me to organize it again for next year, though I did allow a few of my Cubs and Joeys come and help out, they were a bit nervous and shy, but other than that, they loved helping out   J”
  • Beldon (WA): “The youth members and adults had a great time and feel it is a good place to help out.”
  • 1st Herne Hill (WA): “It was an extremely good day. All the youth members thoroughly enjoyed the event and were enthusiastic about raising money for the cause. One of the youth members had encouraged the group to participate because of a close friend’s ongoing fight with Cancer. This was a very worthwhile event and an excellent way for the youth to provide some meaningful community service.”
  • Green Acre (NSW): “They all had a wonderful day and were very impressed after we were told of their results. As a beginner group we were very happy with the way the day went. We are looking forward to helping out again next year.”
  • 1st Hoxton (NSW): “Members loved raising money and helping out in the McDonald’s restaurant. It was fun and found it worthwhile. Yes will participate next year.”
  • Alawa (NT): “They felt great and had a great day. The kids are already looking forward to next year.”
  • Algester (QLD): “They had a great time and they thought it was a great idea.”
  • City of Devonport (TAS): “All enjoyed a good day and certainly thought it worthwhile.”
  • Kelmscott Scout Group (WA): “The youth at Kelmscott Scout group love this event. It is something that they themselves enquire about at the beginning of every year – “Stitches” are we going to be participating in McHappy Day again this year?  Please make sure that you register our interest! I feel that some of them (Youth Members) found it a bit hard, but they all managed to overcome fears and put a smile on their faces.”

McHappy Day may also provide an opportunity for you to establish an ongoing relationship with the management of your local McDonald’s restaurant. This could result in employment opportunities, prize donations or community advertising for Scouts.

In return for Scouts Australia’s participation in fundraising for RMHC on McHappy Day, McDonald’s will provide participants with a free badge as well as a Scouts promotional tray mat in all its 800 restaurants from 15 August - 11 September 2012!
