For all active Venturers, Rovers and Leaders who have been hogging the flying fox activities at the Jamboree and dream about abseiling, rock climbing, bushwalking and canoeing...now you can do what you love and take on a career where you can actually get paid for it!

Scouts Australia is opening its first National School in Adventurous Activities allowing you and your Scouting friends to get nationally accredited qualifications in Outdoor Recreation - Certificate II, III, or IV in Outdoor Recreation, depending on their current skill and previous history. This also has the potential for future employment in the outdoor industry.

This initiative, developed by Reg Williams, Chief Commissioner of Australia, aims to increase the number of adventurous activity guides and instructors nationally and to provide career pathways for Venturers and Rovers, with New South Wales elected to run the first school at Cataract Scout Park in January 2014.

This exciting camp will last for 12 Days between 13 to 25 January 2014. It will cover activity streams like bushwalking, abseiling, canyoning, caving, canoeing/kayaking, Sailing with some possible options; or a more concentrated stream involving just one or two activities. This will allow you to not only do what you love but get nationally recognised qualifications for it!

This is an exciting time for Scouting, with it leading the way in the outdoors while complying with current industry requirements.

Scouts Australia envisages participation from all states, with members from the Adventurous Activity Teams across Australia assisting in the running of the event.

EVENT DETAILS

Date: 10am Monday 13th January, 2014 to Friday 24th January, 2014. 3pm
Cost: $1150.00 + Transport (includes food, use of activity gear and equipment, local transport to and from activity venues)
Location: Base: Cataract Scout Park – Appin New South Wales
Located 30 minutes to Wollongong Beaches and water activities on in the Illawarra & Sydney Harbour and just 50 minutes south of Sydney near Appin. Abseiling, canyoning and caving activities will take place at venues in the Southern Highlands and Blue Mountains .

The aim would be that we would hold a 12 day camp where Venturers, Rovers and Leaders have the opportunity to gain components towards their SIS20210 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation, and SIS40310 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation; this would be dependent on their current skill level and competencies. This is a great opportunity for our members especially those seeking employment in the outdoor industry.

A SIS20210 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation could be gained over this period, depending on your selection of activities being offered, it is also possibly to gain some aspects of SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation and SIS40310 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation and have a progression path planned for when you get back to your respective State. If you come with existing skills it may be possible to gain your Certificate III or IV. Each applicant will be assessed and guidance given so depending on your reason for attending, activity skill qualification or obtaining a full certificate we can assist with your desired outcomes.

PAYMENTS (Due Dates): The total amount of $1150.00 can be paid at any time. If you would prefer to pay via instalments. Below are the due dates:

Deposit of $400.00 with application prior to the 31st July, 2013

2nd Instalment $375: By the Monday 30th September, 2013

Final Instalment $375: By Friday the 29th November, 2013

CHECKLIST OF ITEMS REQUIRED:

Copy of your First Aid Certificate (if you have one)
Copy of any qualifications you hold in either SRO or SIS-10
Current e-Mail address that we can use for communications

ACTIVITY INFORMATION:

Locations and availability may vary due to Min/Max numbers, weather, and local factors. Please include as much information as possible regarding your previous history, as we will assess every application separately and plan a progression path for your requirements.

Venturers will be able to undertake SIS20210 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation and WORK TOWARDS SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation, this will vary from person to person based on previous skill, experience, and qualification already gained.

Rovers and Leaders the potential for SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation or SIS40310 Certificate IV in
Outdoor Recreation is based on previous training, skills and experience. There is insufficient time in 2 weeks to
gain the skills and experience required for a SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation or SIS40310 Certificate
IV in Outdoor Recreation from a zero or little experience base.

Once applications have been received by the end of July, 2013. This will allow organisers to assess activity
numbers and applications and place members in patrols.

It is essential that you provide a suitable email address (preferred Option) so that we can remain in contact regarding your selection of activities, your current skill level, and your intended progression path.

There are strict packaging rules that apply to gaining a full certificate in outdoor recreation, so ensure you choose your activities carefully, and put as much information on your application so that we have an understanding of your desired outcome, in this way we can guide you once your application is received.

If you currently hold any SRO (previous system) or SIS10 qualifications please ensure we have copies with your application so that we can take your previous history into account when forming our patrols for activities.

Rovers and Leaders who are looking to achieve SIS30410 Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation or SIS40310 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, would ideally already have some qualifications or be prepared to undertake a RPL (Skills recognition), at this level the expectation would be that you would take a leading role in the organisation of Groups and the planning and running of the activity. So again please make sure we are aware of this on your application.
