National Chief Executive
Richard Miller
Richard Miller is the National Chief Executive at Scouts Australia's National Office at Chatswood in Sydney. His management credentials are built on experience over the past 30 years with a number of Australia's leading companies. These positions have given him significant experience at strategic and operational levels of general management, especially in the areas of corporate planning, marketing, brand and business development, and marketing communications.
These positions included Product Management with the Lindeman Wines Division of Philip Morris Group during the 1970s, and Senior Account Director roles with J Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather Advertising during the 1980s. In these prominent advertising agencies he was responsible for a diverse range of major clients such as Kelloggs, Johnson & Johnson, Wellcome Pharmaceuticals, Xerox, Air NSW, ABC Radio and ICL Computers.
During the late 1980s to early 1990s he held senior positions with National Australia Bank, including National Head of Communication Services where he developed the strategic brand positioning of the Bank.
In recent years Richard has held senior positions in the not-for-profit sector, initially as Marketing Director of the Royal Blind Society, one of the country's largest fundraisers. There he reversed the society's decline in members and supporters, increased marketing income and surplus as well as broadening its income base. Prior to his present role with Scouts Australia he was Executive Director of The Medical Foundation of the University of Sydney. Richard holds a B.Com (Marketing) degree from the University of NSW, has completed the Advanced Management Program at Mt Eliza Management College and holds an Australian Institute of Company Directors' Diploma from the University of New England.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management as well as a Fellow and Certified Practicing Marketer (CPM) of the Australian Marketing Institute. Senior industry association positions held have included NSW President of the Australian Marketing Institute and National Board Director in 1994, while in 1995 he was a National Board Member of the Australian Direct Marketing Association (ADMA). In addition, during 1998 he was elected Chairperson of the NSW State Government's "Charities Ministerial Advisory Committee" following three years as a committee member.
Richard is Vice Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Region's Management Sub-Committee, being previously Vice Chairman of the Scouting Profile Sub-Committee. He has also served as Deputy Chairman of the Sydney North Region of the NSW Branch and is currently an Honorary Commissioner of NSW Branch.
Richard enjoyed a number of years as a Scout in his early teens. He is married to Libby. They have two children, Sarah and James, who have also been Scouts.
